JerryG, Ken R, Kozy and I will be in Florida for the next match, gearing up to shoot FLOP12 (Florida Open 2012).

Wish us luck - Kerry Dean has agreed to handle scoresheets, but I'll probably score the match after I get back...

Finally, the poll for extending the shooting season has been taken into consideration - we're looking into the logistics of it now... We may need a few hands to help out, so if you're interested in helping out, find a job you're into and we'll look into it.

Registration is now closed - We sold out in 4 minutes. To all those that tried to register and couldn't: I'm sorry. It is not my intent to piss anyone off in regards to registration. I cannot control who sits down first and waits to register. All I can say is that I still think that this is the most equitable way to cap matches at a safe number.

Additionally, to those trying to register more than one person, if you couldn't, that was because the tickets you were trying to purchase were sold out from under you... Your 15 minute "window" only guaranteed you access to 1 ticket.

Look folks, the truth of the matter is that this sport is growing and we're rapidly outgrowing the venue we're at - however, there are no other venues in the area. Until there is a viable alternative, we'll continue this process.

Lastly, some folks have asked to raise the limit of shooters to ~30. We're now looking back into that.

December 2011 Man-Vs-Man Steel & An Announcement!

Happy New Year!!

2011 was a breakout year for the club in regards to attendance, quality of stages and the smoothness with which we're able to run ever-increasing crowds of folks through.

That said, there will be some significant changes made to the way in which matches are coordinated!

1.) We are only going to accept pre-registered folks through EventBrite. The match fee will remain $15.00 and we will cap at 24 competitors (Three match directors are necessary and will be squadded/handled ahead of time.)

2.) If you aren't a USPSA member, we will extend you a courtesy of 2 matches to try it out. After that, you must have a USPSA number in order to shoot. Sign up here. It is $20.00 for an associate membership.

3.) If you register, but do not show, there are no refunds. I'm sorry - part of our goal is to simplify the paperwork and a refund policy is not feasible.

4.) We will no longer accept walk-ins. If you show up with $15.00, I will be forced to turn you away.

5.) Tickets will go on sales the Monday before a match at 8 AM and end at 8PM on the Wednesday before the match... You are limited to 3 ticket purchases.

6.) Please, do not park at the Vet Clinic. Do not block the vet clinic rear-lot access!!
You can park in front of the welding shop, and along the west side of the welding building. Do not block the house next to the welding shop. Please leave some spaces for the "House of Glass" folks who are also trying to run a business.

On to fun things!

Congrats to Kerry Dean - winner of the vs. match. Congrats to Emil K. for taking second and winning the alternate bracket! Both winners received a $15.00 off coupon for Optics Planet and a 10% off ammo at HP!

Second place winners were Jay Carillo and, that chump, Les Kismartoni! JC walked away with a 10% off ammo at HP coupon. Les got a headache for his efforts.

Lastly, I'm sorry to have sent one of our newer competitors home last night - I hate turning people away, but with 38 people, it was going to be impossible to keep sanity... Also if I managed to bark at anyone, please know that I luv you all and was just trying to determine the best way to navigate the troubled waters... (Sorry GerryD...)

That said we got through the match pretty smoothly and managed to get some video!

Here's how it works:

As folks show up, they get a warm-up match, then we start to put people in the Double Elimination bracket. People will shoot a minimum of 3 times.

After that, we'll do a grudge match: call out another guy, and run the stage - additionally, you can call out variations like

1.) Need a reload before hitting the falling plates
2.) Stepping into a box before hitting the falling plates
3.) Straight-up, no reload, no step.
4.) Start facing uprange
5.) etc.

We'll do that until it is time to pickup and get gone...

A Quick Discussion About the Stages

Both stages merit some discussion - a bit of understanding how USPSA is scored can help here...

Fluffy's Revenge 2

The second stage, Fluffy's Revenge 2, is a simple speed shoot (well, except for revolvers). There are 8 shots, and if each shot is worth 5 points, that's a maximum of 40 points for the stage.

What is interesting is that there are a number of folks that shot maximum point values and still ranked low overall. This is because the Hit Factor is points divided by time. While a fast miss is inexcusable, shooting accurately, faster, will help a competitors overall standing.

USPSA is different from bullseye: shoot as fast as you can garner ~92% of the total possible stage points. Again, if you're shooting less than 92% of the points, consider taking more time to break your shots and if you're shooting above that, consider speeding up.

What can you do to speed up? Accept an imperfect, "flash", sight picture, especially at 7 yards.

Tom's Columns

This was a 22 round stage, max points were 110. Whenever a stages has drop turners that allow for no-penalty missed shots, the stage can be approached in one of two ways:

1.) Shooting all of the shots for maximum points
2.) Excluding shots on the no-penalty turners.

So, essentially, the stage is either a 110 pt or 100 pts.

Which path to choose? Consider how much time it would take to shoot the extra shots (factor in if a reload is necessary, movement is necessary, etc...) and. If it requires significantly more time than it would take to complete the stages, consider skipping it.

For example, the drop-turner was pretty fast and the shots were risky due to the no-shoots in front. Most folks were throwing inconsistent hits on there too... It took the fastest shooters ~2-3 seconds additional time to complete the stage when they were hunting the turner (Bob and Kerry). I figured I could save time by getting GREAT hits on the other targets and skipping the turner...

This gamesmanship isn't for everyone, so your approach may be different, but since USPSA is still a game, it seemed to work here.

1.) The Fast Drill, IPSC-style. 7 Yard USPSA target, no slide lock reload, mandatory magazine change. We'll run that twice.

2.) Head Games, a stage that we've run before.

End of Year Pizza Party

Our indoor '10-'11 indoor season will draw to a close on May 19th, 2011 with an all-steel versus match, followed by a pizza party at "The Foxhole" - the club will order the pizzas and beer you just have to show up!

Anyway, I always get a few questions as to why we stop shooting for the summer - last years post summarized it well:

I've gotten a few questions as to why we stop shooting in May. The answer is simple:

There are so many outdoor venues running USPSA around here during the summer that we just don't get enough people to make it worthwhile.

Last year I pointed at a few club, but since January (as a New Year's affirmation) I've been compiling events on the WIILSHOOT.COM blog. Check the calendar to find matches - there are SO many opportunities out there, it is amazing!

USPSA Names MISS the Host of the 2012 Steel Challenge!

Exciting times guys'n'gals! See below! Congrats to Mike K and James L, number 1 and 2, respectively!

Sedro Woolley, WA - The United States Practical Shooting Association and the Steel Challenge Shooting Association have named McHenry IPSC and HP Shooting Center as the host for the 2012 Steel Challenge shooting event, beating out such prestigious ranges such as the Universal Shooting Academy in Florida, United States Shooting Academy in Tulsa, and the ISI Steel Challenge ranges - the traditional home of SCSA events! - in Piru, CA!

McHenry IPSC Shooting Society president, Julie Scheibe and Match Director, Les Kismartoni, along with CRO, Tom Palmer, graciously accept this offer but wonder how to most effectively move 200+ shooters through a grueling 3-day, 5-stage match in such a compact space.

Additionally, USPSA and SCSA named Mike K. and "The James L." honorary members of the SCSA for their outstanding performance on the 3/31/2011 qualifications/elimination bracket!

Using Scores Diagnostically

A few folks asked about it tonight - Remember that Hit Factor is just "Points per second". If you're shooting more than 90% of available point, you might consider speeding it up a bit.

Conversely, if you're dropping far under 90% of available points, you're shooting too recklessly and might consider slowing down some.

Remember that points are in the Pts column.

Using the first stage as an example:

There were 10 chances to score a "perfect" 5, thus the maximum points you can accrue is 50.
(10 * 5 points per A zone or per steel). If you shot ~43-46 points, you're probably going at the "right tempo".
If you shot more points than that, you probably want to push faster.
If you shot less points, then you probably want to focus on taking more time...

For the next stage, we'll run a modified "Triple Nickel". Since our range is narrow and since 5 second fixed time is tough, we're going to run it Comstock and on two groups of vertically spaced targets and a single target in the middle. We'll still require a mandatory reload sometime after you've started shooting. No concealment because this is USPSA, dammit!

For all those wondering why Pine Tree hasn't submitted scores...

I spoke to them today and when they upgraded to the new version of EzWin score, they had a few issues - so did MISS, if anyone remembers. Additionally, there were some issues with setting authorized score-ers through USPSA.

~~They're hoping that the results should get in before the 10th...~~

UPDATE: They submitted the classifiers for December and January today. I don't they submitted the results to USPSA because they make that available on their site. Check the scores ~15th and see if things jive.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night! From all of us at MISS, have a safe and Happy New Year!

A few of us are going to head out to the Pine Tree Classifier Match on Sunday - if you're planning to go, but we missed syncing up, we'll be there ~7AM. There are about 9-10 of us planning on making it out there. Get on a squad with some familiar faces and at least that's one ball in your court!

I've been working on a side project, WIIL Shooting, which is going to be a blog & calendar tracking ALL local "action pistol" events - USPSA, IDPA, "Urban Action", non-sanctioned matches, pin-shooting, 3-gun - in the Northern Illinois & Southern Wisconsin area. I've got a few more clubs to list - Oak Park & NISA to name a few - but expect to see these listed in a few days. A few folks have asked me what I use for mag pouches...

They're Ghost Magazine Pouches - you can mount 'em traditionally or perpendicular to your body.

I saw Ben Stoeger with 'em and decided thought it made a lot of sense... I'm surprised that they're made of cheaper ABS plastic, but they seem to have held up pretty well.

Scores and a Quick Discussion...
Scores and classifiers have been posted to USPSA. For some of you new folks who have signed up to USPSA, know that it'll take you 4 classifiers to get "ranked" and that they only update the USPSA database once a month, roughly around the 15th. So, if you check, you might not see something posted as of yet...

For those of you that haven't signed up with USPSA - please don't forget to do so: It is only ~$25.00 for an Associate Membership...

How USPSA calculates classifiers: Top shooters at larger matches post results for most of them and USPSA decides on a "maximum Hit Factor". From there, USPSA determines your class based on what % of that maximum Hit Factor you clinch:

Grand Master 95 to 100%
Master 85 to 94.9%
A 75 to 84.9%
B 60 to 74.9%
C 40 to 59.9%
D 2 to 40%

For some classifiers, the max HF is fairly low (like CM 03-08, "Madness"), but on others, it is quite high - like the one below. Keep in mind that each classifier is testing various skills - the one below tests relaxation while shooting, the ability to "rough-index" the firearm, and ability to reload.

Sorry folks - ran outta steam last night... I'll get those scores posted on Saturday AM.

A few of us talked about the "Tueller Drill" last night... Xavier Thoughts had a great summary:

A common test of handgun skill is to start with one’s hands at shoulder level with a holstered gun and place two shots on a target 21 feet away within 1.5 seconds. Typically, those well trained with handguns can complete the drill in about one and a half seconds, although a select few can place the two shots on target in under one second.

Over two decades ago, Sgt. Tueller wondered how quickly an attacker with a knife could cover those same 21 feet. So he measured as volunteers raced to stab a target. He determined that the distance could easily be crossed in 1.5 seconds. These results were first published as an article in S.W.A.T. Magazine in 1983 and in a police training video by the same title, “How Close is Too Close?”.

YouTube has a few videos of this drill - most suck - but the following is from a match. The target clears the distance a bit fast and the shooter is a high masters level competitor, but you get the picture just how fast things happen...

Starting from Box A, engage Target 1 with only 2 shots. While on the move, engage Target 2 while between the boxes with only two rounds. From Box B, engage Target 3 with only 2 rounds.

We're going to be running 99-21, "Minimart", a 12 rd Virginia Count stage. Here are some folks running it:

We'll swap out the counter for a chair and a table, then run a 20-something Comstock course from seated.

Lastly, we'll run "No-Shoot Nightmare", a 10=round Comstock course...

Thank you to everyone who came out last night and were patient while we tried to explain our new policy changes.

Overall, we were impressed: Even with the late start and high volume of shooters, we were able to get out early, give the new shooters adequate time and grab pizza in a timely fashion!

For the next match, we have a few more tweaks:

We will cap at 27 shooters - 3 squads of 9.
We will have 3 sign-in sheets to speed sign up. Bill has graciously allowed us to use the front room as a sign-in area. Thanks Bill!

Please, do keep in mind that starting in January we will require USPSA membership to compete - except for new shooters who will have a month to try it out.

Upcoming Club Changes - Please Read!

Dear MISS competitors,

The MISS directorship met recently to review the match-to-match operation of the club and decided to change a few aspects of its functioning in order to ensure a smoother match, better stages and a less stressful experience for the RO's.

Please review the changes below:

Membership:

The current membership system is too cumbersome - we will revert back to a fixed $15.00 match fee for all qualified competitors (see #3 below)
Existing members will be refunded the $15.00 overage that they paid in the form of prepaid match fee to be used no later than our last shoot in the 2010-2011 season.
Membership in USPSA will now be required to shoot, with two exceptions:
1. Prospective members will have a one-month grace period to assess MISS/USPSA-style shooting.
2. Existing club member that are not USPSA members will have until January 6th, 2011 to become USPSA members.

USPSA Rules:

We are a USPSA affiliated club and follow the current USPSA rulebook.
Competitor equipment - in regards to firearms and placement - will be inspected on the line by the RO. (If you have questions regarding your equipment/legal placement, please ask and we'd be happy to help you.)
We will be enforcing USPSA's rules regarding disqualifications (DQ). Competitors that DQ will be coached through the DQ in order to turn the experience into a learning one.

Match Structure:

Matches will be capped at 27 competitors.
Registration will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exceptions being the current Range Officers, Match Director, and Range Master.
Scoresheets will now include the waiver and emergency contact list on the back - failure to fill it out will result in dismissal. (Please note that it is MISS' general policy not share any personal data - other than scores and names, which are necessary for USPSA scoring - to 3rd parties)
Entries will generally not be allowed after the first walk through begins, except at the discretion of the Match Director and then only as a courtesy for such incidents such as inclement weather, vehicle problems, etc for known competitors.
The scorekeeper shall not tally points on the line and shall focus on getting the shooting order called out.
Squadding:
1. We will run three (3) squads of up to nine (9) shooters.
2. Only the current squad and the RO will be allowed on the range under normal circumstances.
3. All squad members are requested to be in the range while their squad is shooting.
  1. Members waiting are requested to setup/tape.
  2. Only members currently shooting, on deck, or in the hole are exempt from setup/taping.
4. The RO's will be distributed among squads so that they can focus on their match performance.
5. The third squad will generally be reserved for new competitors and will be assigned a "mentor" to guide them through the match.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN:

The four rules (Cooper's Rules) of firearm safety will be discussed at the first stage walkthrough of each match.
The Match Director will identify emergency personnel at the beginning of each match.
In the event of a serious injury, the squad should clear the line and notify the Match Directory immediately.
The Closest trauma center is Centegra McHenry - that's where we will request you be taken.
Several competitors have trauma kits - one will be on the line at all times in case of incident.

Bill at HP runs .22 caliber "plate rack" man vs man matches on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, starting this Friday. I can't make it out - but a lot of folks will be there!

Introduction to Handgun Competition Class

Our friend Greg Holz, TD Roe and Perry Wilson (NROI CRO!) are going to be teaching an intro to handgun competition class at Maxon's in Des Plaines.

If you're thinking of starting USPSA or IDPA, they might be able to get you off on the right foot with regards to scoring, equipment setup, rules, etc.

$125.00 + 500 rds ammo. Class size is limited to 10 students.

This class is November 12th, 13th and 15th from 5PM-9PM each night at Maxon's Range in Des Plaines, IL.
